This issue contains information on how you can help contribute to a fundraiser for Hartsfield Elementary School’s Family Resource Center; details on how you can get involved with the Association by responding to one of several important volunteer opportunities; and, how to help protect you and your neighbors through involvement in neighborhood initiatives like Crime Watch and Neighbor-to-Neighbor.
Do you want to help bridge the digital divide? Do you want to support our local elementary school? Do you want to improve our neighborhood?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, here is an opportunity to act.
How to help: Hartsfield Elementary School (our neighborhood school) is building a parent engagement center (PEC) where parents can access resources and technology to bridge the digital divide and foster success.
The school system is funding reconfiguration of the media center and an adjacent room for the engagement center. However, the school needs additional funds to provide the furnishings and technology for the center (desks, chairs, computers, printers, whiteboards, and the like).
To help furnish the PEC, send donations by check to MPNA, PO Box 504, Tallahassee, FL 32302. Please write “Hartsfield PEC” on the “For” line of the check.
Background: In 2020 South City Foundation (SCF) donated $7,500 to the center through a grant from the Community Foundation of North Florida. The Hartsfield School Advisory Council is working on a fundraising plan for additional funding needed to create a room with resources to meet the needs of many families, including those with preschoolers who are not yet attending Hartsfield.
SCF also coordinated the distribution of $1,000 grants from the Community Foundation of North Florida to Southside neighborhoods adjacent to or near the South City neighborhood. These grants are meant to support better community engagement. As Southside neighborhoods, Myers Park, Woodland Drives, and Indianhead Lehigh received these grants. These three neighborhoods have partnered to strengthen our participation in our local elementary school by directing the grants to the Hartsfield PEC. In addition, the neighborhoods are launching a fundraising campaign for the PEC with the goal of doubling the amount we received from the grant.
To participate in the fundraising effort and to support our elementary school, send donations by check to MPNA, PO Box 504, Tallahassee, FL 32302. (Remember how our long-time board member Vern Williams used to stress the importance of improving our local schools? He was right, and this is an opportunity to do so. Civic purposed and enlightened self-interest in action.)
Please plan to attend our General Meeting on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 PM. The meeting will be held at the Neighborhood Affairs Community Room, 912 Myers Park Drive. The main agenda items include the election of board and officers, neighborhood safety, and a report on invasive plant removal activities.
